SPAR Baby Proteas Delayed Arrival

Netball South Africa wishes to congratulate the SPAR Baby Proteas on their outstanding performance at the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup, held in Gibraltar from 19 to 28 September.

Prior to this tournament, South Africa’s highest finish at the event had been fifth, achieved three times in succession. In 2025, the SPAR Baby Proteas made history by winning their first-ever quarter-final, before narrowly missing out in both the semi-final and bronze medal matches. Despite this, the team achieved their best finish at a Netball World Youth Cup and leave the competition as the tournament’s highest-scoring side.

The SPAR Baby Proteas were due to arrive back in South Africa on Tuesday, 30 September 2025 at around 07:00 at OR Tambo International Airport. However, due to severe weather conditions in Gibraltar, flights were grounded. Arrival dates and times will be communicated in due course

“As a federation we are doing our utmost to ensure the safety of our team. We are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to make sure that everyone returns home safe and sound. We had looked forward to celebrating with everyone who supported the team on Tuesday, but due to circumstances beyond our control, that has not been possible. We would like to assure you that the players and management are safe, well cared for, and supported during this disruptive period,” said Netball South Africa Acting President, Mami Diale.

Netball South Africa will continue to provide updates as and when there are any further developments.
