About Telkom Netball League
South Africa’s top netball competition featuring 16 teams from the nine provinces. The 2026 edition will see the inclusion of the Malawi and Zimbabwe teams in weeks 1 and 2 as a 17th team.
Established in 2014 as the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League, the Telkom Netball League (TNL) is South Africa’s premier semi-professional netball competition, organised by Netball South Africa. In 2019, Telkom became the title sponsor, leading to the league’s current name. The TNL features 16 teams from all nine provinces, divided into two divisions with a promotion and relegation system. Notably, the Free State Crinums clinched the inaugural championship and have secured four titles to date, while the Gauteng Jaguars hold the record with six championships. The league has been instrumental in elevating netball’s profile in South Africa, providing a platform for players to showcase their talents and fostering the sport’s growth nationwide.

Competition Format & Standings
The tournament consists of two divisions, with Division A featuring 7 teams and Division B featuring 9 teams.
• Round Robin: Teams play a Double Round Robin format, meaning they will play each other twice
• Points System: For point allocation in the Round Robin stage , a win secures 2 points , a draw earns 1 point , and a loss results in 0 points.
• No Extra Time: There is no extra time played during the Round Robin phase.
• The Playoffs: The top 4 teams on the log compete in semi-finals, matching the 1st place team against the 4th, and 2nd against 3rd.
• Finals: Semi-final winners advance to the Final, while the losers play for positions 3 and 4.
• Placement Matches: Teams in log positions 5/6 and 7/8 will play off for those exact positions.
• Relegation: The team in position 7 of Division A will play a relegation match against the team in position 1 of Division B.
Match Duration & Extra Time
- Quarters: The match duration is divided into four 15-minute quarters.
- Intervals: There are 4-minute intervals between the first and second quarters, as well as between the third and fourth quarters.
- Half-Time: The half-time break lasts 8 minutes.
Playoff Extra Time
- The setup: Extra time in the playoffs begins with a four-minute interval after the end of full time. This is followed by two 7-minute halves, with a one-minute interval between the two halves.
- Sudden Death: If the match is still on a draw at the end of the second 7-minute half, play continues until one team is in front with 2 goals.
Telkom Supershot
The Telkom Supershot score period takes place during the last 2 minutes of every quarter.
- The Format: It operates as a dual supershot score period.
- The Points: During this time, goals scored in the Telkom Supershot areas earn 2 points, while goals outside it earn 1 point.
- Exclusions: This scoring rule is not permitted during extra time and extended extra time.
Strategic Timeouts
- The Limit: Each team gets one Strategic Timeout in a match.
- Duration: It is a 1-minute stop.
- When It’s Called: The stoppage happens after a goal, before a centre pass.
