South Africa secured a third victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by defeating Northern Ireland 78-30 in Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon.
After two wins and a rest day, South Africa faced Northern Ireland in their third group match. The two teams have met only once in the Commonwealth Games and three times overall – South Africa having yet to lose against them.
Northern Ireland initially drew first blood from the centre pass, but South Africa responded swiftly to maintain a competitive scoreline. The South African team eventually took control of the game, assuming authority and leading the first quarter 14-8.
Coach Jenny van Dyk made tactical changes in the second quarter by introducing Kamogelo Maseko and Jamie van Wyk. The duo settled in comfortably and maintained the consistency and momentum established in the opening quarter. South Africa continued its dominance, leading the second quarter 18-10 and entering half-time with a 32-18 lead.
With the second half underway, Sanmarie Visser was introduced into the game alongside Tarle Mathe and Elmere van der Berg. Karla Pretorius and Captain Khanyisa Chawane also rejoined the team.
South Africa, with a 14-point lead at the start of the championship quarter, sought to maintain this advantage and sustain momentum. They concluded the quarter with a 21-04 victory.
South Africa entered the final quarter comfortably in control. Coach van Dyk made further substitutions to rotate her players and provide everyone with a chance to play. The match intensified as South Africa applied increasing pressure.
With three consecutive victories, South Africa will face Australia on Wednesday 29th July at 22:00.
