Australia continued their dominance against South Africa as they handed them their first defeat at the Commonwealth Games. South Africa lost the match 57-47 after a hard-fought battle.
The clash between South Africa and Australia was undoubtedly the most significant match of the day. Both teams were undefeated in the tournament and recognised the importance of maintaining their winning momentum.
For Australia, the objective was to extend their winning streak against South Africa while South Africa sought to reverse the situation and secure a victory against the world number one team. As anticipated, the game commenced with South Africa leading 2-0 before Australia could respond. The experience of the Australians became evident as they settled into the game and took a two-point lead for the remainder of the quarter. At the end of the first 15 minutes, Australia led 14-13.
South Africa’s Head Coach Jenny van Dyk substituted Sanmarie Visser for Nicola Smith at the start of the second quarter. Australia, who held a single-point lead, advanced the game to South Africa early in the quarter and continued to score goals while restricting South Africa’s progress. Owethu Ngubane replaced Kamogelo Maseko mid-quarter and Visser and Pretorius swapped positions. Australia went into half-time with a more favourable scoreline, having taken the quarter 18-8.
South Africa made significant changes at the start of the championship quarter. Nicola Smth replaced Karla Pretorius and Refiloe Nketsa replaced Tarle Mathe midcourt. South Africa emerged as the stronger team and secured a 14–13 victory. Australia retained its overall ten-point lead at the quarter’s conclusion.
South Africa continued to challenge Australia throughout the quarter. With a patient approach, they gradually narrowed the Australian lead. The quarter ended with both teams at 12 all.
