The SPAR Proteas will start the 2021 Africa Netball Cup in Windhoek with a brilliant historical track record at the competition.
The SPAR Proteas are yet to suffer a loss at the Africa Netball Cup. At the five tournaments they contested, they won all 26 of their encounters. Four of those wins came against Malawi.
South Africa will battle with hosts Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Malawi for the crown as the continent’s best netball team.
Five of the nine participating teams are in the top 15 on the latest world rankings – South Africa is 5th, Malawi (6th), Uganda (7th), Zimbabwe (12th) and Zambia (15th).
It will only be the sixth time the SPAR Proteas compete at the event. South Africa featured at the tournament in 1995 (in Harare), 1999 (Johannesburg), 2010 (Pretoria), 2013 (Blantyre) and 2019 (Cape Town), winning it on every occasion. In 2011 in Maputo South Africa sent an invitational team.
In between the Africa Netball Cup, the Cosana (Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations) Games were held biannually up until 2009. Thereafter South Africa presented the Diamond Challenge (the first one in 2012) where the top Africa countries were invited.
The 2021 Africa Netball Cup starts Tuesday 9 November in Windhoek with the last day on 16 November. Broadcast and/or livestream details will be made available across all our platforms as soon as they become available.
