Power Week Reflections with Lilies Captain Charmonette Bothma

Limpopo Lilies captain Charmonette Bothma reflects on a historic Power Week 1 and shares her team’s goals heading into the next round of the Telkom Netball League!

1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
Some standout moments were definitely making history by securing our first-ever two victories. It was an incredible feeling to see our hard work pay off. Another big takeaway was how we came together as a team—we pushed through challenges, supported each other, and came out on top. It really showed what we’re capable of when we stay united and focused.

2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on? Any specific areas you’ve identified for improvement?
One key lesson we learned is the importance of staying united and consistent. In some matches, we really showed that strength and cohesion, but in others, it was a bit rocky. That inconsistency is something we’ve already started improving. Moving forward, we’re focused on maintaining that unity and energy throughout every game, not just in moments.

3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you – on or off the court?
A moment that stands out to me in every match is definitely when the shooters line up those Telkom Supershots. There’s something really special about seeing the team rally behind them—it’s not just about the shot, it’s about the trust and confidence they have in each other. Watching the support build around our shooters is honestly heart-warming and shows the true spirit of the team.

4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2? Has anything shifted in mindset, strategy or preparation?
Power Week 1 really highlighted areas where we need to improve. Heading into Power Week 2, our focus is on bringing more consistency and sharpening our communication on and off the court. We’re also building on our fighting spirit—staying locked in from start to finish. There’s definitely a stronger sense of purpose and determination in our preparation this time around.

5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
Mentally, I lean heavily on prayer. Without God, I’d really struggle to stay grounded, but through Him, I find strength and clarity to stand firm in tough moments. Physically, recovery is key—ice baths, rub-downs, and making sure I get enough rest on off days makes a big difference. It’s all about listening to my body and keeping both mind and body in balance.

6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
They play a really big role, and we’re fortunate for that. We have experienced players in both defence and attack, which means there’s guidance and support across the court.

7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures? Any match-ups you’re excited about or goals you’ve set?
We’re definitely looking forward to the matches where we had close encounters and just missed out on wins—those are the ones we’re eager to turn around. At the same time, we’re excited for games where we know we can improve. It’s about stepping up across the board and showing how much we’ve grown.

8. Message to your fans?
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to every single person who’s supporting us—especially those who stood by us even before our first two wins. Your belief, patience, and unwavering support mean the world to us. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re so grateful. Keep watching, keep cheering—we’re not done yet. We’re only just getting started!
