Eastern Cape Comets captain Athenkosi Mbengashe opens up about Power Week 1, the power of unity, and the drive to bounce back stronger.
1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
It’s been special to witness the friendships forming and the unique personalities of both older and younger players coming through. One of the most rewarding parts is seeing the younger players find their footing and experience all their ‘firsts’—moments that may feel routine to us as senior players, but are incredibly meaningful and exciting for them.
2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on?
Consistency is key. While we’ve shown moments of brilliance, we need to sustain that level of performance right through to the final whistle. That said, for a team that hasn’t had much time to train together, we’re making steady progress and growing stronger with each game.
3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you?
Our final game of the first leg against Tshukudu stood out. Despite the odds and a rough start, we came together and played as a solid, united team.
4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2?
With no scheduled training camps, each player is responsible for maintaining their own fitness and working on individual improvements at their respective clubs. Consistency and patience are our key focus areas.
5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
Social media can be tough, especially after games. We’ve spoken about its impact, and I personally limit my usage around match days. We’re guiding younger players to develop mental resilience and focus on what really matters—their growth.
Physically, preparation is everything. Without proper conditioning, the demands of Power Week will leave you battered. Ice baths help, but so does making the most of rest days.
6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
The seniors serve as a link for the younger players. They set the standard and lead by example. It’s been encouraging to see the juniors actively seek out guidance during high-pressure moments. That exchange of experience and energy has been powerful.
7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures?
Just being better than before. We want to perform consistently and show the true talent in this team. There’s something special here—it just needed refining, and we started to show that in our last match.
8. Message to your fans?
We know the first leg didn’t go as planned, but we see your support, we feel your encouragement, and it genuinely lifts us. Knowing we’ve got fans and family behind us gives us that extra push. Thank you! We’re determined to make you proud in Leg 2.
