As the Western Cape Tornados gear up for the final stretch of the 2025 Telkom Netball League, we sat down with Head Coach Lucy Twani to discuss the team’s growth, preparation, and what it will take to finish strong in Durban.
1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
One of the most important areas we’ve grown in, is building connections as a team. At the start, we were still figuring each other out, how we communicate, how we support one another on and off the court. Over time, we’ve built stronger relationships, and that has really started to show in the way we play. There is more trust, more accountability, and a real sense of unity. That connection has helped us lift each other in tough moments and celebrate the wins together. It has become a key part of our identity. We have focused on maintaining our structures and decision-making when the heat is on, and the players have shown tremendous progress in staying calm and executing our game plan, even in tight situations.
2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
For this final stretch, our preparation is multi-faceted. Physically, we are really focusing on managing the load with some players involved in USSA. Mentally, we’re reinforcing our belief in our system and each other. We back our game plan and trust our teammates. We use visualisation to see ourselves playing well, stay calm under pressure, and keep a strong, positive mindset. We stay focused, confident, and ready to give our best every game. Tactically, we’re sharpening our strengths, fine-tuning our set plays, and precisely analysing our opponents to identify and exploit any weaknesses, while also making sure we’re solid in every area of our own game.
3. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
To finish strong in Durban, it will take unwavering discipline and relentless effort. We need to execute our game plan with precision for the full 60 minutes, minimise our unforced errors, and capitalise on every opportunity. Most importantly, it will take a collective belief in ourselves and a willingness to fight for every single ball. Our ability to absorb pressure and respond positively will be important.
4. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
Our team culture has evolved significantly over the course of this year’s TNL. We’ve moved from a group of talented individuals to a truly cohesive unit. There’s a deeper understanding, connection and trust amongst the players, both on and off the court. We’ve embraced a culture of accountability, open communication, and mutual support, which has been important in navigating the ups and downs of the season. The ‘UNSTOPPABLE UNIT’ ethos is truly embedded in us.
5. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
To our incredible fans and supporters, thank you! As we head into this decisive Power Week in Durban, know that we are fully committed and ready to leave everything on the court, and determined to make you proud. We feel your support, and it fuels our fire. We appreciate you!
