As the Mpumalanga Sunbirds prepare for the final stretch of the 2025 Telkom Netball League, Head Coach Faith Motau discusses her team’s growth, preparation, and focus. Here’s what she had to say:
1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
Having to stay consistent in play from the first Power Week and keeping the same momentum throughout the whole competition. Taking into consideration the long breaks between games, players almost zone out and have to refocus into a high-performance mentality.
2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
We are reviewing previous games to identify areas for improvement and focusing on our major dips. We also encourage players to analyse themselves individually, giving reports on their performance. This helps us administer support physically, mentally, and tactically, placing them on appropriate programmes.
3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
Yes, all the players have surprised me. I see growth in specific areas with each game, and most players are handling pressure much better than in previous games.
4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
Great mental preparation.
5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
I’ve seen debutants being embraced and supported by experienced players in a very positive way. They ensure that the new, younger players learn how to absorb pressure and thrive in it. This is the kind of player we aim to build in our Sunbirds team.
6. Looking at the current standings, which upcoming fixture are you most focused on — and why?
We’re currently focused on securing our top-four spot, so every game leading up to that is important. Of course, the semi-finals and finals are next, but we are taking it one game at a time.
7. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
I remain calm and remind them that pressure is a privilege they need to earn. We break the game down into smaller, more manageable segments, focusing on absorbing pressure for 5 minutes at a time. By staying calm, I help them stay grounded and focused to get the job done.
8. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
Yes, we’ve faced major injuries to senior players, which has forced the team to realise that everyone needs to be on board. The younger players need to step up and contribute in the same way. There’s no time to be young in a team like the Sunbirds — you need to learn fast and implement what’s required.
9. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
Our senior players have taken at least one younger player under their wing to help them understand what’s expected of them within our team structure.
10. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
Firstly, a massive THANK YOU for your support. Your encouragement means everything to us, especially in both the good and challenging times. Your voices and support are one of our biggest motivators. We appreciate your applause as much as your constructive criticism — we know it comes from a place of wanting to see us improve. For that, we are always grateful. Thank you!
