Power Week Reflections with Flames Captain Martiné Jordaan

Captain Martiné Jordaan reflects on team growth, gritty battles, and gearing up for more in Power Week 2.

1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
A standout moment for us was the way we played and stepped up from previous years. It was really rewarding to see our hard work reflected on the scoreboard. I loved seeing how our team has come together and how strong our connection has become.

2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on? Any specific areas you’ve identified for improvement?
The biggest lesson we’ve learnt is the importance of being switched on from the first whistle—it takes 60 minutes of full concentration. We’ll be working on maintaining consistency and avoiding dips during matches.

3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you?
Our matches against the Jaguars and Fireballs stood out. We proved to ourselves that not only do we belong in the TNL, but we can compete at a high level. It was a moment of realisation that what we’ve been working on is paying off.

4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2? Has anything shifted in mindset, strategy or preparation?
We’re sticking with our strategy. It’s about locking in combinations and making sure each player knows how to connect with their partner on court.

5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
Sometimes, physical recovery is easier than mental. We focus on immediate recovery after games—ice baths, physio sessions, etc.—and take it one game at a time to stay mentally strong.

6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
There’s a fine line between advising and coaching, and I think we’ve found a great balance. It’s all about giving the younger players confidence and helping them grow.

7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures?
We’re really excited to see how much we’ve grown and what new heights we can reach as a team.

8. Message to your fans?
The fans were amazing throughout Power Week 1—we couldn’t have done it without you. We hope to see you again in Power Week 2. Your support means everything, and who knows when we might have that home ground advantage again? We love meeting you!
