Power Week Reflections with Jaguars Captain Jamie van Wyk

Gauteng Jaguars captain Jamie van Wyk reflects on lessons, leadership and legacy after Power Week 1 of TNL2025.

1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
Once we recognised the need to step up as a team on a completely new level, we started to see real improvement, and things only got better as the tournament went on.

2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on? Any specific areas you’ve identified for improvement?
We took away a lot of valuable lessons from the first leg of TNL. As a team, we realised there are several areas we need to focus on and improve once we’re back home. Some of those include the connections in both the defence and attacking circles, as well as starting matches strongly and with intent.

3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you? On or off the court?
A match that stood out for me was when we played against the Fireballs. It’s always a competitive clash, but it was really good to see that we matched their intensity. It gave the girls confidence that we can win matches like that.

4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2? Has anything shifted in mindset, strategy or preparation?
We now know exactly what we’re up against. Going into Power Week 2, it’s about putting in extra work, going the extra mile in training, and making sure we come out with a dominant start.

5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
It’s pretty intense both physically and mentally, especially with matches every day, sometimes even twice a day. As players, we need to adapt and make sure we prioritise rest and recovery.

6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
The experienced players are playing a massive role in mentorship. We have a very young squad, which is an amazing learning opportunity for them. The older players are sharing their knowledge, setting high standards, and showing what the Jaguars’ culture is all about—hard work, discipline, and commitment. Once those values are entrenched, we know the legacy will continue.

7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures? Any match-ups you’re excited about or goals you’ve set?
We’re really looking forward to showing teams that we’re not just here to make up the numbers—we want to be competitive in every single match.

8. Message to your fans?
From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Jaguars, thank you to all our fans who support us through both the wins and the losses. We appreciate you travelling all the way to Sun City to back us. We don’t just play for each other—we play for you.
