Power Week Reflections with SA U21 Captain Phophi Nematangari

SPAR Baby Proteas captain Phophi Nematangari reflects on Power Week 1 and what’s next for the green and gold rising stars.

1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
How much the game has changed with the introduction of the Telkom Supershot this year—it’s added so much excitement!

2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on?
Playing as a unit. That’s something we want to grow and strengthen going forward.

3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you?
There were so many standout moments from different players, especially those Telkom Supershots—wow!

4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2?
There’s definitely been a mindset shift. Most of the players who experienced the league for the first time have now found their groove and adapted to the intensity. We’re returning with renewed focus, energy and attitude.

5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
We take it one day at a time and focus only on what’s within our control.

6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
We check in with them, remind them that we’ve got their backs, and create an environment where they feel supported to play their game and grow.

7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures?
Coming back together as a team and playing the game we love. We want to build on what we’ve started and solidify our combinations.

8. Message to your fans?
Thank you all for your love and support—you inspire us to keep going!
