Q&A with Dr Freda Kemp, Head Coach of the Southern Stings

As the 2025 Telkom Netball League enters its final and most decisive Power Week, Southern Stings Head Coach Dr Freda Kemp shares her reflections on the team’s remarkable growth, their goals for the finish line, and the drive behind their push for a podium finish in Durban. From standout performances to strategic preparation, here’s what she had to say:

1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
The biggest growth has been in how quickly we adjusted after Week 1 and how connected we became as a team.

2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
We used these last three weeks to the fullest. Physically, we’re focused on maintaining sharpness and managing recovery. Mentally, we’re building confidence and clarity, while tactically we’re targeting specific areas to exploit Crinums and Baobabs. Every session has a purpose—this team is motivated and determined to finish in a medal position.

3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
Several players have stepped up, but it’s the collective effort that’s been most impressive. From younger players growing into their roles to leaders raising the standard in critical moments—everyone has contributed to our rise. I was impressed with Rochelle Rossouw, who stepped up in the defence position.

4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
We need to stay united and fearless. Beating Crinums and Baobabs is within our reach if we play to our strengths and stay composed. Execution under pressure will be key—we’ve shown we can rise, now we must finish.

5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
The culture has grown stronger and more unified. There’s belief, mutual respect, and a real hunger to succeed. It’s no longer about just showing up, it’s about showing up to win, together.

6. Looking at the current standings, which upcoming fixture are you most focused on — and why?
We’re fully focused on the Crinums and Baobabs fixtures. Winning both is our path to finishing 3rd and earning a better semi-final draw. The stakes are high, and the team knows what’s at stake.

7. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
We simplify our focus—control what we can, one centre pass at a time. We talk about playing with purpose rather than playing not to lose. That mindset keeps the pressure from becoming overwhelming.

8. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
Absolutely. The shift from 5th to 4th taught us that consistent work pays off. That turning point showed us that we can set goals and meet them—and now we’re aiming even higher for a medal finish.

9. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
They’ve been instrumental. They’ve kept the energy focused and have been relentless in their example—on and off the court. Their leadership has made the difference, especially in tighter moments.

10. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
Thank you for being with us every step. Your support has driven us, especially when things looked uncertain. We’re pushing for a medal finish—and we’ll give everything to make you proud in Durban.
