As the Kingdom Stars approach the final stretch of the 2025 Telkom Netball League, Head Coach Nompumelelo Mthembu shares her thoughts on the team’s growth, preparation, and upcoming challenges. Here’s what she had to say:
1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
The defensive side has been exceptional.
2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
We are pushing the team more on fitness by attending scheduled training sessions and have arranged for a mental strength coach to assist.
3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
Definitely. Thulisile Maduna, Nozipho Ntshangase, and Nosihle Mkhwanazi have impressed me with their performance.
4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
Teamwork and consistency will be key.
5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
The defensive side has grown a lot, and while individual performances have improved, there are moments where I feel the players have worked incredibly hard.
6. Looking at the current standings, which upcoming fixture are you most focused on — and why?
There’s no specific fixture. All four remaining matches are important to us, as we need all the points we can get.
7. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
I remind them to stay calm and composed. When players are under pressure, they sometimes lose focus, so it’s important to keep them centred.
8. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
Not really. We are still struggling to maintain the lead in certain games.
9. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
The senior players are trying their best, but with a group of individuals having different mindsets, it’s been a challenge.
10. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
Keep supporting us — we love you! We promise to give you our best performance, especially since we’re playing at home in Durban. Please come out in numbers, buy your tickets, and support us during all the matches.
