As the 2025 Telkom Netball League heads into its final stretch, Eastern Cape Aloes Head Coach Sameshia Esau shares her thoughts on the team’s journey so far. From player development and tactical improvements to key moments and leadership impact, Esau offers insights into what it will take to finish strong in Durban.
1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
The girls believed in themselves, they trusted each other on court and they gave it 120% on court.
2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch – physically, mentally, and tactically?
The girls have the ability to play really well. We are taking care of a few niggles, strengthening and conditioning the bodies better. We have to play towards our strengths and follow the game plan at all times. We are working on execution. As the coach it is difficult at times when the girls don’t implement as instructed.
We must play our game short and sharp and continuously drive onto the ball. We need the shooters to be more clinical and convert. Players must also be able to adapt on court.
3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
I have really grown with this team. Each one of them has the ability to change the game in our favour, however netball is a team sport and I just need each player to do their job, focus on winning the one-on-one battles.
The captain Noluthando has been very consistent and plays a pivotal role at the back. Juanita van Tonder keeps coming alive and turning the ball at vital moments to ignite a spark within the team.
Hanniska has played a vital role on wing attack for the team.
4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
We need to arrive for all matches and try to be more consistent in execution. We deserve to be in the A division.
5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
The team dynamic is really great. The sisterhood off court has been much better and that added trust has enhanced the trust on court.
6. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
We sat and chatted about personal and team goals. I have a relationship as the coach with each and every one of my girls.
We discuss combinations, starting players and bench players – there is a reason and a method to the process.
We all have different abilities and therefore I have to be trusted to make the vital decisions. I know which players I need to pull off, have them watch and then make the necessary changes.
7. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
We had outstanding matches against the Golden Fireballs. It’s as if everybody was in sync. Although we didn’t get a win, the girls were amazing on court. Every single player came to the party and played their role well.
8. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
My team and I have been putting in the work. Nolu has been instrumental in the defensive side.
We have team goals and individual goals that we are working towards.
9. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into the decisive Power Week?
We would like to thank you for your support. As the sport grows and evolves, we are continuously working on improving our skills and growing on and off the court.
We have to play towards our strengths, go out and have fun and learn and learn.
We are extremely grateful for Telkom Netball and the exposure for both players and coaching staff.
