Q&A with Vivian Foko, Head Coach of North West Tshukudu

As North West Tshukudu gear up for the final stretch of the 2025 Telkom Netball League, we sat down with Head Coach Vivian Foko to discuss the team’s journey, preparation, and what lies ahead. Here’s what she had to say:

1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
Their strength. Those little dynamites have shown me that you can take them to war anytime, no matter the circumstances, and they will come back as warriors.

2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
We are practising hard and have organised a friendly game for the girls. This will help them see themselves as others see them — a threat that everyone wants a piece of. Above all, I always encourage them to relax and play short balls.

3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
Most definitely, Jeane Visser has demonstrated priceless skills as a GK. The last game proved that our players can adapt to any situation.

4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
Discipline and communication, without which everything will fall apart.

5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
We’ve definitely improved in dealing with human perceptions and have come to realise that our collective efforts are our true strength.

6. Looking at the current standings, which upcoming fixture are you most focused on and why?
We’re focused on the match against Sonoblomo. They beat us by 2 goals in the first leg due to small mistakes we are now working on. We also aim to secure a win against the Kingdom Queens, after a draw with them due to inconsistencies.

7. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
I always tell my players that every game is important, but their focus should be on enjoying themselves on the court. Keeping that balance helps them stay relaxed and focused.

8. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
I believe no knowledge is absolute, and there’s always room to learn from anyone and any situation. Even the dull and ignorant have a story. Watching videos of other teams has helped us strategize better.

9. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
Senior players share their skills and experience with the team, helping to guide them. Management also offers pep talks, bonds with the players, and shows that we care. When players feel valued, they give their best effort.

10. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
We would not be where we are without the love and support from our fans. Your messages, whether near or far, mean so much. Please continue supporting us, and most importantly, pray for us.

Catch the last Power Week from 14-20 July 2025 at the Durban ICC. Tickets now available online only here.
