Q&A with Zandile Njeza, Head Coach of the Eastern Cape Comets

As the Comets continue their journey in the 2025 Telkom Netball League, we spoke with Head Coach Zandile Njeza about the team’s growth, preparation, and the challenges ahead. Here’s what she had to say:

1. What has been the biggest area of growth for your team since the opening whistle of Power Week 1?
Our attackers have improved significantly compared to the first leg. We’ve focused on enhancing their ball skills and placement, which has made a noticeable difference.

2. How are you approaching preparation for this final stretch — physically, mentally, and tactically?
The focus is on refining ball skills and ball placement, ensuring we’re sharp in both attack and defence. We’re also reinforcing mental toughness and tactical awareness to keep the team focused and prepared.

3. Are there any standout players who’ve surprised or impressed you this season?
Yes, Amanda Mfulathelwa and Kernisha Wiese have shown great potential and growth, both mentally and physically. Their development has been a key highlight for the team this season.

4. What will it take for your team to finish strong in Durban?
Starting strong and finishing strong will be crucial. We need to focus on converting rebounds and intercepts into goals, making the most of every opportunity.

5. How have you seen your team culture evolve over the course of this year’s TNL?
Inclusivity is now more practical, and there’s a strong sense of cultural respect and tolerance, which has brought unity to the team. It’s helping us come together as a solid unit.

6. Looking at the current standings, which upcoming fixture are you most focused on — and why?
We’re particularly focused on the match against Sonoblomo, as they beat us by 2 goals in the first leg due to some small mistakes that we are now working on. We also aim to secure a win against the Kingdom Queens, especially after the draw with them due to inconsistencies.

7. How do you help your players stay grounded and focused amidst the pressure of must-win matches?
By constantly reminding them of our main objectives in the TNL. We emphasise 100% performance on court, making them aware that they are being watched by others who think they can do better.

8. Have there been any key lessons or turning points this season that have reshaped your team’s outlook?
Yes, the TNL is a high-performance netball league that requires players to be ready physically, mentally, and tactically. It’s been a lesson in how much time and training are needed to prepare, and the importance of commitment and readiness.

9. What role have your senior players or leadership group played in keeping the squad motivated?
Our senior players are mentoring, motivating, and encouraging the team in every way. Their guidance and leadership have been invaluable throughout the season.

10. Lastly, what message would you like to share with your fans and supporters heading into this decisive Power Week?
To our incredible fans: you are our 8th player, and we appreciate you more than anything. We need your support now more than ever. However, please understand that the team changes each season, with some players moving up to Division 1 and others improving or falling off. It takes the whole nation to develop a netball player. Keep the hope alive, and continue supporting your team!
