Umpire Spotlight: Thuto Magome

From Potchefstroom to Dubai! Get to know Thuto Magome – the passionate PhD student and rising umpire who’s representing SA at the World Netball UAE Nations Cup in June.

Born and raised in Potchefstroom in South Africa’s North West Province, Thuto Magome still calls this town home today. When he’s not officiating on the netball court, he’s immersed in the world of science – currently pursuing a PhD in Microbiology at North-West University.

Outside his academic and umpiring responsibilities, Thuto enjoys relaxing by catching up with friends over lunch. Grounded in faith, he draws inspiration from his favourite scripture: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11:1

1. How did your netball journey begin?
My netball journey dates back to primary school. I used to stay after class and watch the girls practise. One day, in an attempt to chase us away, the late Coach Nana Leping asked why we were still there and if we wanted to play. We said yes. From that moment, she introduced me to a local men’s netball club – something I didn’t even know existed at the time. I was too young to play officially, but I would always attend practices and watch their league matches until I was eligible to join.

2. How did you get into umpiring?
I was introduced to umpiring around 2015 or 2016 by my teammate, Miles. I’ve been umpiring ever since.

3. Which tournaments have you umpired at so far, and which ones are your favourite or most memorable?
I’ve officiated at several Netball South Africa national tournaments for both male and female divisions, including:

  • Telkom Netball League
  • USSA
  • Varsity Netball
  • Schools Netball

My favourite season so far has been 2024 – every tournament was exciting in its own way. My most memorable moment, however, was earning my first international cap at the Africa Netball Championships. It was a special milestone, made even more meaningful by sharing it with my mentor and friend – both in academia and netball – Dr Adrian Abrahams.

4. What is the most difficult part about being an umpire?
Remaining mentally strong at all times. Umpiring demands focus, calmness, and resilience under pressure.

5. What is your favourite part about being an umpire?
Everything! From the travelling and the friendships to witnessing the skill and passion of the players on court. Watching athletes pour their hearts into the game and being part of that energy is incredibly fulfilling.

6. Talk us through some of this year’s Telkom Netball League excitement.
The standard of play is extremely high. Both players and officials continue to rise to the occasion, making it a thrilling and memorable tournament each year.

7. What advice can you share as an umpire?
Be a lifelong learner. Always strive to be better than your last performance. Don’t limit yourself – take every opportunity to improve and refine your skills.

8. Congratulations on your inclusion to umpire at the upcoming World Netball UAE Nations Cup in Dubai – how does this make you feel?
I’m very excited and looking forward to the experience. It’s an honour to represent Team White from South Africa. I hope to learn as much as I can and give my very best and beyond.
