The Free State Sonoblomo’s Rethabile Mqweba reflect on Power Week 1 and the road ahead in the 2025 Telkom Netball League.
1. What were some of the key takeaways or standout moments for your side during Power Week 1?
Power Week 1 gave us a strong sense of where we stand and what we’re capable of as a team. For me personally, it was my first TNL experience and a great opportunity to play against such talented players—I’ve learned a lot from them. A standout moment was how we remained composed under pressure during the final quarter of our opening game. Our team showed resilience and unity. Defensively, we had brilliant intercepts that shifted momentum in key moments.
2. What lessons has your team taken from the opening matches that you’re hoping to build on? Any specific areas you’ve identified for improvement?
A key lesson we’ve learned is not to underestimate any team or player. We’ve also realised the importance of consistency—especially during transitions. We’re working on improving our midcourt connections and shooting accuracy under pressure, while sticking to our game plan and focusing on stronger starts.
3. Was there a particular match, moment or player during Power Week 1 that really stood out for you?
Yes—Charné stood up for the team even under pressure after receiving a warning, and we went on to win that match against the Comets. Off the court, the unity and support in our team really stood out. On court, Leané Otto had an impressive debut, showing great maturity. One highlight was our defensive trio shutting down a critical attack late in Game 2.
4. What is the team focusing on as you prepare for Power Week 2? Has anything shifted in mindset, strategy or preparation?
We’re focusing on better starts and maintaining consistency throughout all four quarters. Our mindset has shifted towards being more proactive, and we’ve also been focusing on mental resilience and recovery to keep performance levels high during a demanding schedule.
5. How do you manage the physical and mental demands of the league, particularly during intense Power Week fixtures?
We just kept pushing, even when our bodies were tired. Recovery protocols like ice baths and rubdowns, along with support from physios and teammates, are key. Balance and communication help us stay mentally focused. Spending time together off-court also helps with team morale.
6. What role are your team’s experienced players playing in mentoring younger or newer team members?
Our senior players have played a massive role—sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, and guiding the younger players. Whether it’s tactical advice or personal support, they’ve been leading both on and off the court.
7. What are you and your team most looking forward to in the next block of fixtures?
We’re excited to face the Eastern Cape Comets again—it’s always a tough contest. One of our goals is to convert close games into confident wins. We’re also aiming for a top 4 finish and looking to keep building momentum through Power Week 2.
8. Message to your fans?
To all our fans—thank you for your incredible support. We feel it every time we step on court. Your energy lifts us and we’re proud to represent Sonoblomo with heart and hustle. Stick with us—we’re just getting started!
