SPAR Proteas vice-captain Bongiwe Msomi will take over the reigns as captain of the national team when the team travel to New Zealand and Australia for the Quad series. The announcement was made on Thursday after Maryka Holtzhausen was withdrawn from the team following an ATL injury at the recent SPAR national Championships in Durban.
Msomi (28), who captained KwaZulu–Natal’s Kingdom Stars to their best position (fifth) in this year’s Brutal Fruit Premier League, is an experienced player with 66 international caps behind her name. She made her debut for the Proteas in 2011 and became deputy to Holtzhausen in 2013. Msomi lead the South African Invitational side in 2013’s Diamond Challenge and the Baby Proteas at the Junior World Cup in 2009.
She also played for the Surrey Storm in the UK Superleague in 2015.
She will be deputised by Karla Mostert who also played in the Superleague for Team Bath earlier this year.
The SPAR Proteas will depart for Auckland on Saturday the 20th of August from O.R Tambo International Airport at 16h00. The team will Connect with SPAR Proteas consultant coach, Norma Plummer and her assistant Nicole Cusack in New Zealand ahead of the tournament which also includes Australia and England.
South Africa plays their first match at the quad series on the 27th of August against the Australian Diamonds.
