KARLA PRETORIUS EARNS HER PLACE IN THE CENTURION CLUB
SPAR Proteas Vice Captain and 2019 Netball World Cup player of the tournament Karla Pretorius became only the fifth player to earn her 100th cap for South Africa when she took to court against Sri Lanka at the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town. She joined captain Bongiwe Msomi, Maryka Holtzhausen, Phumza Maweni and Erin Burger.
Karla got her debut cap back in 2011 against Malawi and she has never looked back, she now plies her trade in Australia where she plays for Sunshine Coast Lightning. The 2023 Netball World Cup is Karla’s third after playing during the 2015 and 2019 one respectively.
“There are many milestones that one can look at, I am extremely proud to have reached this one more so in front of my home crowd, friends and my family. I am extremely proud to have been able to wear the green and gold for my country for so long,” said Karla Pretorius.
Karla had taken a break from playing netball for the birth of her child in 2022 – she last played for South Africa in 2021 against Ireland and only returned to the team again in January 2023 for the Quad Series.
“It was always going to hard coming back into the team after being away for that, other players stepped up and cracked open the competition for positions in the team – I knew that I’d have to work hard to earn a place at the team again. I am happy that my hard work has paid off,” concluded Pretorius.
